I decided to get back into Linux and installed Ubuntu www.ubuntu.com/ . Works fine but I didn't like the default nasty brown scheme. The bad thing was, when I went to install a different flavor, I found that the Ubuntu disk partitions are robust, to say the least. Nothing could delete and overwrite them, including Windows XP. I managed to finally kill them with gParted download.cnet.com/GParted-LiveCD/3000-2094_4-10698802.html, though, a nice handy bootable Linux partition manager.
So on to Mandriva www2.mandriva.com/, which is pretty nice, and then I thought I'd take a look at something that I could use for network backups and such. I found Amahi www.amahi.org/. I wasn't real happy that it runs on Fedora 10, since 12 fedoraproject.org/ is the newest version, but here goes.
I installed Fedora from a DVD image and all worked well until Fedora (or Amahi) shut down my network card. Nothing I could do got it to come back to life, so I said "screw this noise" and moved on.
Tried to install FreeNAS www.freenas.org/ and never could get an image (tried three different mirrors) that worked. All of them failed with read errors once I started installing. I don't think the problem is on my side since I was successful downloading and burning all of these other images.
I have now installed Mint www.linuxmint.com/ and am running the updates. Why Mint? Because I found this article www.linux-watch.com/news/NS9015653445.html and thought I'd give it a try.
I have 5 or 6 old computers that I am picking through to get the best parts installed in 2 or 3, and I want a box to play with Linux on and a box for a file server and backup platform. I am also going to set up a music box in the gameroom with the pool table and all, but I think I'll just keep Window$ XP Pro on that one for ease of use for anyone else. God knows I don't want to have to teach drunks Linux just for them to play some songs!
