For those who have seen the website stats I post, we get hits every month from nipr.mil and have for a long time. I finally looked to see who that was, and it seems that a lot of people are posting things that they've been visited by NIPR and are paranoid about it. Here's what one guy posted: "NIPR is National Internet Protocol Router Nipr.mil is not a single domain a but a hush-hush web proxy that acts as a gateway for hundreds of U.S. military domains in order to hide their identities. It was established by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) in response to a memorandum (CM-5 1099, INFOCOM) issued in March 1999 by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, calling for "actions to be taken to increase the readiness posture for Information Warfare." "Uncontrolled Internet connections," the document says, "pose a significant and unacceptable threat to all Department of Defense information systems and operations."
I went out to DISA's website (BTW, I did a little work with them while a gov't contractor) and couldn't find a thing on NIPR.
I'm not paranoid about anything. It's probably just some military guys surfing the net 'cause they're bored.

There is nothing scary about nipr.net.....well...inherently. As you said, it's probably somebody on a govt puter surfing. Now if its was sipr.net....

Well, that's Secure Internet Protocol Router, so I would expect that it would only be connecting to other secure computers.

Yes, of course. We're supposed to be getting those soon....well we heard that about 5 months ago. Nothing yet. I'm curious as I've never done either before (sipr or nipr). We just have the Offutt WAN now, which is probably a lot better for surfing. Although the level of restrictions they have leveled on us has pissed me off to no end (I can't go to Nova from work anymore). Still, better than nothing.

I've been using Nipr and Sipr for years now, and as far as I'm concerned Nipr is useless. Pretty much almost any government site that you can access on Nipr, you can access it from home. Nipr is like having dialup and all the lines are busy.
Sipr, on the other hand, is where you can get alot of work done. You can't surf the web like you can Nipr, but there are plenty of secure sites to check out.
Pretty much I only open up Nipr just to clean out all the Spam Mail. You wouldn't believe how much friggin Spam gets sent on the green side, all in the name of "Official Business".

You ought to read some of the forum posts, though - Google for nipr and military. These guys are bouncing off of the walls about it. Talk about paranoid!
I had some hits from DISA. I'll bet some of those guys would flee the country if DISA hit their websites!!

167 hits from nipr.mil this month, from 4 different sites. If I was one of those paranoid types, I'd think they were watching me. HEY, WHO'S IN THAT VAN ACROSS THE STREET?!?!

Cover blown! Let's roll!
Didja ever see that episode of the Simpsons where the feds have a surveilance van with a huge sign on the side advertising "Two Guys From Quantico Pizza Delivery?" With two grim, black suit and tie, rayban wearing dudes with wires coming outta their ears holding a pizza box.

"And that was the last we ever heard from Timberwolf.Wonder what ever happened to him?" (cue X-files theme music) ROFL! but hey, guys, military personnel being bored or not, neither one of us can exclude the possibility of being spied on with effort to weed out those info-leaking dudes. I read a ton of stuff on this kind of thing, and TImber, you may be paranoid or only little, your government is paranoid more than you. so yeah, thats our episode for tonight...from the twilight zone.
