I’m afraid our society is moving inexorably towards the time when it will be perfectly acceptable for men to carry purses. Don’t believe me? Then take this quick test: Name a container, frequently made of nylon or leather, that a person carries with them, that may hold a wallet, checkbook, sunglasses, aspirin, tissues, etc. A purse? Yeah, that fits the description . . . but so does a fanny pack, guys.
Now, fanny packs started out as a small pack carried on the web belt in the military. It was smaller than a backpack but held a good bit of gear. It was used like a “day pack” – big enough to carry rations and supplies a day or two. I have one and use it for this very purpose while in the woods. It holds food, matches, flares, utensils, a first aid kit, etc., and still leaves room on the web belt for two canteens, a knife, a machete, and two magazine pouches.
Somewhere along the way, the civilians got a hold of it and made it much smaller and nicer (as in, they made it out of material that was not heavy-duty olive drab canvas). As it shrank and got nicer, it moved away from being a pack (macho) and closer to being a purse (girlie). The name also became nicer. It went from “ass pack” to “butt pack” to “fanny pack”. How sweet! Wouldn’t want to f**king offend anyone with our salty language, now would we?
These things don’t clip onto a belt any more; instead, they have their own belt. And it’s just a short step from belting it around your waist to clipping the belt together and slinging it around your shoulder.
Why does this bother me? Because I hate to see our society degenerate into a bunch of sissies. Straight (supposedly) guys are wearing earrings now. Conversely, the women are getting tougher.
Look at the number of women who had careers (other than “Mother”) in the 1950’s, then the ‘60’s, etc. all the way up to today. Look at the number of women in careers that were distinctly off-limits, such as fireman, police officer, astronaut, and airline pilot, just to name a few. Women want to be in front-line combat units – this at a time when lots of sissy Gen-X males are too wrapped up in themselves to even think about training hard and getting dirty and maybe even – GASP! –getting HURT! - in the military.
I think women can do anything, and should be allowed to. I don’t have a misogynistic cell in my body. I just hate that the males are heading towards “sissy” when the females are heading towards “macho”. Come on, guys, you’re slacking off! Act like you’re got a pair!
